    Area of Science:

    • Plastic Surgery
    • Reconstructive Surgery

    Background:

    • Breast augmentation complications have significantly decreased with surgical experience.
    • Capsular contraction (undue postoperative firmness) is the primary remaining complication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the aetiology, prevention, and treatment of capsular contraction after breast augmentation.
    • To assess the overall safety and efficacy of modern breast augmentation procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • Detailed review of existing literature on capsular contraction.
    • Analysis of complication patterns in experienced surgical hands.

    Main Results:

    • Most previous complications of breast augmentation are now rare.
    • Capsular contraction affects a minority of patients but requires specific management.
    • Approximately 90% of breast augmentation cases yield excellent results.

    Conclusions:

    • Breast augmentation is a safe and highly successful operation.
    • Further advancements in managing capsular contraction can enhance patient outcomes.
    • Addressing capsular contraction is key to improving the already high success rate.
