Idiopathic pulmonary artery (PA) aneurysm is a benign condition. Early diagnosis via chest radiography and echocardiography is crucial for favorable outcomes in patients without intracardiac shunting.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Radiology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Pulmonary artery (PA) aneurysms are rare vascular abnormalities.
  • Etiologies often include congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, or connective tissue disorders.
  • Idiopathic PA aneurysms, without identifiable causes, are less common.

Observation:

  • Two cases of idiopathic PA aneurysm are presented in women aged 52 and 73.
  • Presenting symptoms included exertional palpitation, fever, and cough.
  • Imaging revealed hugely dilated main PA, confirmed by CT and echocardiography.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic imaging (radiography, CT, echocardiography, angiography) confirmed fusiform dilatation of the main PA.
  • No evidence of left-to-right intracardiac shunting, pulmonary valve stenosis, or significant pulmonary hypertension was found.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients remained asymptomatic without specific treatment or surgical intervention.
  • Implications:

    • Idiopathic PA aneurysm represents a benign entity with a favorable prognosis.
    • It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of enlarged pulmonary trunk on chest radiography.
    • Initial diagnostic workup should include two-dimensional echocardiography.
