Area of Science:

  • Health services research
  • Quality assurance in healthcare

Background:

  • Patient satisfaction is increasingly used as a key metric for healthcare quality assurance.
  • Existing patient satisfaction surveys, particularly those from the USA, exhibit significant theoretical and methodological limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To critically analyze the concept of patient satisfaction within healthcare.
  • To evaluate the validity of patient satisfaction as an indicator of healthcare quality.

Main Methods:

  • Review of patient satisfaction surveys.
  • Analysis of theoretical and methodological deficiencies in current survey practices.
  • Examination of consumer satisfaction concepts in healthcare.

Main Results:

  • Surveys report consistently high patient satisfaction, which is difficult to interpret due to methodological issues.
  • Numerous theoretical and methodological deficiencies were identified in the reviewed surveys.

Conclusions:

  • The current concept and measurement of patient satisfaction are inadequate for assessing healthcare quality.
  • Further critical analysis of the term "satisfaction" is needed, drawing from diverse research areas.
