Summary

Combination therapy with interferon-alpha (IFN) and ribavirin shows significantly higher efficacy for chronic hepatitis C than IFN monotherapy. Side effects are comparable, with anemia being a notable exception.

Background:

  • Chronic hepatitis C (HCV) treatment has evolved, with interferon-alpha (IFN) monotherapy showing limited sustained response rates.
  • Preliminary studies suggested enhanced benefits of combining IFN with ribavirin for chronic HCV.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis estimating the efficacy and tolerability of combination therapy (IFN-ribavirin) versus IFN monotherapy for chronic hepatitis C.
  • To evaluate sustained response rates and adverse events in patients receiving combination therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Meta-analysis of data from 59 patients treated with IFN (3 MU thrice weekly) and ribavirin (1000-1200 mg daily) for six months.
  • Follow-up for six months post-therapy, assessing sustained response (ALT normalization, HCV-RNA negativity) and treatment discontinuation due to side effects.
