Contingent color aftereffects, which challenge associative learning theories, were observed using novel stimuli like orthogonal black bars and grids. These findings support alternative explanations for this visual phenomenon.

Background:

  • Contingent color aftereffects (CCAEs) are typically explained by associative learning.
  • Some experimental data appear inconsistent with a purely associative interpretation of CCAEs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether CCAEs can be induced by stimuli previously thought incapable of eliciting them.
  • To provide further evidence for or against associative interpretations of CCAEs.

  • Seven experiments were conducted to test CCAE induction.
  • Stimuli included single orthogonal black bars on colored backgrounds, geometric forms, and two orthogonal grids of the same color.

  • CCAEs were successfully observed with all tested stimuli, including orthogonal black bars and grids.
