Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Surgical resection of HO may be necessary to restore range of motion and ambulation in affected patients.

Background:

  • Radiographs revealed HO in the quadriceps expansion.
  • Initial manipulation under anesthesia provided temporary improvement, but ROM deteriorated.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of HO successfully restored ROM to 110 degrees flexion.
  • Post-operative indomethacin use showed minimal HO recurrence.
  • Physical therapy and ROM exercises are crucial for HO management.

Implications:

  • HO should be suspected in TKA patients with unexplained ROM deficits.
  • Interventions like manipulation or surgical resection may be required for severe cases.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate management are key to improving patient outcomes after TKA.
