    Summary

This study analyzed delivery methods for 142 multiple pregnancies from 1986-1990. Findings suggest an increased need for cesarean sections in multiple pregnancies, especially with premature delivery or unfavorable fetal positions.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
    • Perinatology

    Context:

    • Multiple pregnancies present unique obstetric challenges.
    • Delivery outcomes are influenced by gestational age and fetal positioning.
    • Cesarean section rates vary significantly based on obstetric factors.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate delivery methods used in multiple pregnancies between 1986-1990.
    • To analyze the impact of prematurity and unfavorable fetal positions on delivery outcomes.
    • To determine the necessity of operative interventions in multiple gestations.

    Summary:

    • A retrospective analysis of 142 multiple pregnancies revealed delivery methods including normal delivery (73.2%), cesarean section (24.7%), internal version (1.4%), and forceps (0.7%).
    • In cases of premature delivery (n=81), normal delivery predominated (79%), with cesarean sections at 18.5%.
    • For unfavorable fetal positions (n=45), cesarean sections were more common (55.6%) compared to normal delivery (40%).
    • Combined indications of prematurity and unfavorable positions led to operative interventions in 12 cases.

    Impact:

    • The study advocates for increased operative interventions, specifically cesarean sections, in managing multiple pregnancies.
    • These findings may inform clinical guidelines for optimizing delivery strategies in high-risk multiple gestations.
    • Understanding delivery trends can improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in multiple births.
