Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary leptomeningeal melanoma is an extremely rare central nervous system tumor.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing rare brain tumors.

Observation:

  • A 25-year-old male presented with sudden severe headache and loss of consciousness.
  • Initial cranial computed tomography suggested arteriovenous malformation.
  • Open biopsy confirmed malignant melanoma, leading to radiotherapy.

Findings:

  • Autopsy confirmed the diagnosis of primary leptomeningeal melanoma.
  • The patient succumbed to bronchopneumonia approximately 7 months after initial diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of rare central nervous system tumors.
