    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Investigating the efficacy of pimozide in treating pseudo-neurotic conditions.
    • Assessing pimozide's impact on psychiatric symptoms and daily functioning.

    Observation:

    • 44 patients with pseudo-neuroticism received pimozide (2-12 mg daily) for ten weeks.
    • Concurrent use of previously ineffective tranquilizers was permitted.
    • Dexetimide, an antiparkinsonian agent, was available for use if necessary.

    Findings:

    • A significant majority of patients showed considerable improvement across Wittenborn psychiatric scale items.
    • Socio-professional adaptation demonstrated a parallel positive trend.
    • Four patients required dexetimide, particularly those on higher pimozide doses.

    Implications:

    • Pimozide demonstrates therapeutic potential for pseudo-neurotic patients.
    • Further research into optimal dosing and adjunctive therapies is warranted.
    • Understanding the need for antiparkinsonian agents at higher doses is crucial.
