Summary

Shift work did not significantly alter nocturnal melatonin secretion in nurses. However, individuals with a stronger morning preference showed increased melatonin levels after one year of shift work.

Area of Science:

  • Chronobiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Occupational Health

Background:

  • Shift work is common in nursing and can disrupt circadian rhythms.
  • Melatonin is a key hormone regulating sleep-wake cycles and is sensitive to light exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of irregularly rotating three-shift work on nocturnal melatonin secretion in nurses.
  • To explore potential correlations between shift work, melatonin profiles, and individual chronotype (Morningness-Eveningness score).

Main Methods:

  • Nocturnal serum melatonin levels were measured in seven female nurses at baseline and after one year.
  • Blood samples were collected six times (20:00-06:00) under dim light conditions.
  • Morningness-Eveningness (M-E) scores were assessed at baseline.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Pronounced inter-individual differences in melatonin concentrations were observed.
  • A trend towards increased maximum melatonin and summed melatonin was noted at follow-up.
  • Melatonin concentration at 06:00 was significantly higher at follow-up.
  • Higher baseline M-E scores correlated with increased summed melatonin at follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Nocturnal melatonin secretion did not significantly increase overall after one year of shift work.
  • Individuals with a higher M-E score (morning types) exhibited greater increases in melatonin secretion.
  • Further research with more participants may reveal significant increases in maximum and summed melatonin.
