Phenylethylamine (PEA) shows sustained antidepressant effects in most patients, offering relief for depression, even in those unresponsive to standard treatments. This neuroamine improves mood rapidly without causing tolerance.

Background:

  • Phenylethylamine (PEA) is an endogenous neuroamine with stimulant properties.
  • A PEA deficit is hypothesized to contribute to certain forms of depression.

Observation:

  • Fourteen patients with major depressive episodes were treated with PEA (10-60 mg/day) and selegiline (10 mg/day).
  • Patients were re-evaluated after 20-50 weeks of continuous treatment.
  • The study observed the long-term efficacy and side effects of PEA treatment.

Findings:

  • Antidepressant response was maintained in 12 out of 14 patients.
  • Effective PEA dosage remained consistent over the treatment period.
