Immediate tonsillectomy (IT) is a viable treatment for peritonsillar abscess (PTA). This retrospective study found IT under general anesthesia suitable for advanced PTA cases.

Background:

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) treatment in Japan typically involves antibiotics, drainage, and delayed tonsillectomy.
Immediate tonsillectomy (IT) offers an alternative surgical approach.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of immediate tonsillectomy (IT) for peritonsillar abscess (PTA).

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 119 PTA cases treated between 1990 and 1995.
Computed tomography (CT) scans used for diagnosis in all cases.
Five selected cases underwent IT under general anesthesia.

Main Results:

CT scan confirmed PTA in all 119 patients.
Five patients (4.2%) underwent IT under general anesthesia, all male, aged 50-62.
