Detection of cytokine expression in human palatine tonsils

Abstract:
We investigated cytokine mRNA expression in human palatine tonsils from 20 patients. Expression of TNF-alpha mRNA was detected in 11 of 20 patients. IL- 1 alpha mRNA was detected in 2 patients and IL-2 mRNA in one patient. No expression of IL-4, IL-6 and interferon-gamma was detected in any of the 20 patients. TNF-alpha may play an important role in tonsillar diseases.
