Summary

Electron microscopy reveals abnormal nail matrix cells in onychomatricoma. These cells show reduced tonofilaments and desmosomes, indicating disturbed differentiation in this nail tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Nail biology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Electron microscopy

Background:

  • Onychomatricoma is a benign nail matrix tumor.
  • Understanding its cellular origins is crucial for diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the electron microscopic features of onychomatricoma.
  • To elucidate the differentiation patterns of basal cells within the tumor.

Main Methods:

  • Transmission electron microscopy was used.
  • Analysis of basal cells in the proximal zone and parakeratotic cell columns.

Main Results:

  • Basal cells exhibited diverse morphologies, including lacunar forms and limited cytoplasm with mitochondria and tonofilaments.
  • Parakeratotic cells showed elongation and homogenized tonofilaments.
  • Poorly differentiated cells with granular cytoplasm were observed around lacunae.

Conclusions:

  • Onychomatricoma basal cells have diminished tonofilaments and desmosomes.
  • Cellular evolution within the tumor is non-uniform.
  • The tumor likely arises from disturbed differentiation of nail matrix cells.
