[Improvement of patients' condition by using a mechanical heart-assist device]
1Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, Bruxelles.
Abstract:
In the light of previous reports, the authors analysed the progress observed in 4 patients treated for 3 to 6 months with an implantable mechanical assist device (Novacor, Baxter). The rapid and sustained improvement of the haemodynamic status of the patients was certainly the primordial factor which enable the other functions to recover. Improved tissue perfusion resulted in normalisation of renal, hepatic and respiratory functions. Neurohormonal activation, a sign of low cardiac output, was also attenuated with time. The patient's physical capacity improved and, due to the reliability and small size of the device, they were able to recover a degree of autonomy and appreciable quality of life.
