    Summary

Repeated intra-articular corticosteroid injections for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis did not inevitably cause rapid joint destruction. Judicious use of these injections can be beneficial in managing chronic arthritis.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Orthopedics
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Intra-articular corticosteroid injections are commonly used for chronic arthritis.
    • Concerns exist regarding potential joint damage from repeated injections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term radiological effects of repeated intra-articular corticosteroid injections in knee joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of X-ray films from 65 patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
    • Injections were administered over a 4 to 15-year period.

    Main Results:

    • 15 out of 65 patients showed no radiological deterioration.
    • 38 patients had minimal or moderate deterioration.
    • 10 patients showed marked deterioration, and 2 showed gross deterioration.

    Conclusions:

    • The study does not support the claim that repeated intra-articular corticosteroid injections inevitably lead to rapid joint destruction.
    • Judicious use of intra-articular corticosteroids is valuable in managing chronic arthritis.
