Summary

Puerperal infection occurred in 1.2% of cases, with higher rates after cesarean sections (5.4%) compared to vaginal deliveries (0.8%). Cesarean delivery significantly increased infection risk, with endometritis being the most common complication.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Infectious Disease Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Puerperal infection remains a significant concern in maternal healthcare.
  • Understanding incidence and risk factors is crucial for effective control strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the actual incidence of puerperal infection in a specific hospital.
  • To identify risk factors and common clinical presentations for targeted interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, descriptive study conducted from September 1993 to March 1995.
  • Data collected on cases meeting inclusion criteria, analyzed using statistical software (Lotus 123, Statgraphics, EPI-6).
  • Calculated incidence rates, odds ratios, relative risks, and analyzed hospitalization duration.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Overall puerperal infection cumulative rate was 1.2%.
  • Infection rates varied by delivery method: cesarean section (5.4%), vaginal delivery (0.8%), and miscarriage (0.3%).
  • Cesarean delivery posed a significantly higher risk (RR 5.76-19.66) compared to vaginal delivery and miscarriage.

Conclusions:

  • Cesarean section is a major risk factor for puerperal infection.
  • Endometritis, alone or in combination, was the most frequent clinical manifestation.
  • Complicated endometritis necessitated hysterectomy in 15 cases, though no deaths were recorded.
