Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of teleradiology in identifying renal calculi.
  • To compare the accuracy of findings on transmitted radiographic images versus actual plain films.

Main Methods:

  • 26 kidney, ureter, and bladder (KUB) plain films were digitalized and compressed.
  • Images were transmitted via telephone lines to a remote site for viewing on a monitor.
  • Two attending urologists and two endourologic fellows interpreted either transmitted images or original radiographs.

  • Overall accuracy for plain films was 94% (fellows 92%, attending 96%).
