Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Comparative Medicine

Background:

  • Spinal cord compression can lead to significant neurological deficits in animals.
  • Intradural-extramedullary cysts are a rare but serious cause of spinal cord disease.

Observation:

  • A five-year-old domestic longhair cat presented with hind-limb ataxia and incontinence.
  • Radiographs revealed an enlarged spinal canal (T12-L3), and myelography identified an intradural-extramedullary cyst at T12-T13.

Findings:

  • Surgical exploration via hemilaminectomy confirmed a subarachnoid cyst causing severe spinal cord compression.
  • Cyst drainage resulted in marked improvement of neurological signs within three weeks.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention for subarachnoid cysts can lead to excellent outcomes in feline patients.
  • This case highlights the importance of advanced imaging and neurosurgical techniques in diagnosing and treating spinal cord abnormalities.
