Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Hyposplenism is linked to various gastrointestinal disorders, notably celiac disease.
  • Functional asplenia is characterized by absent splenic reticulo-endothelial cell activity.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old female with a resolved pulmonary infection presented with findings suggestive of splenic hypofunction.
  • Radiolabelling studies confirmed functional asplenia.
  • Gastrointestinal biopsies revealed microscopic collagenous colitis without other inflammatory changes.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited functional asplenia and microscopic collagenous colitis.
  • This represents the first documented instance of this dual diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, previously unreported association between functional asplenia and collagenous colitis.
  • Further research may elucidate the underlying mechanisms connecting splenic function and colonic pathology.
