[Reduction of the weight of prostatic tissue during transurethral resection]

Objective:
To study the weight reduction of prostatic tissue removed during transurethral resection.
Method:
22 hyperplastic prostate glands enucleated via a transvesical approach were resected in vitro, under conditions as close as possible to in vivo resection in 11 cases. The authors compared the weight of the enucleated prostates with the weight of fresh resection chips and the weight of chips fixed in Bouin solution.
Results:
The weight of the chips was 28% lower than that of the prostates, while the weight of chips fixed in Bouin solution was 8% higher than that of the fresh chips.
Conclusion:
Transurethral resection causes a 28% loss of the weight of resected prostatic tissue and fixation in Bouin solution of these same chips increases their weight by an average of 8%.
