Know how male catheterisation

Relief of urinary retention and the management of intractable incontinence are two common indications for male urethral catheterisation. Although the technique has, historically, been carried out on male patients by doctors and male nurses, it is a skill that should also be learned by female nurses to ensure patients receive the highest quality of care. Before carrying out the procedure, nurses should ascertain that they have achieved the level of competence required by their employing organisation and that the policies of the employer regarding male catheterisation are followed.
