Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing

Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to an individual's self-evaluation of their overall life satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment. This multifaceted construct is typically assessed by analyzing the balance of positive and negative emotions alongside perceptions of life satisfaction. Personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion are strongly associated with variations in SWB, offering critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of emotional well-being.

Social Relationships and Well-Being

The significance of social relationships in psychological well-being is a well-established area of inquiry within social psychology. Research consistently demonstrates that the presence of meaningful, supportive relationships enhances emotional health, while the absence or deterioration of such connections can contribute to psychological distress. Relationships serve as a foundation for emotional support, identity, and social belonging, all of which are critical to an individual’s overall...

Self-Esteem

Self-esteem, a core aspect of psychological well-being, reflects an individual's positive and negative self-evaluation in terms of worth, competence, and overall value. It is both a stable trait and a dynamic process, influenced by experiences and social interactions across the lifespan. While global self-esteem offers a general assessment, research highlights that self-esteem is multidimensional and varies across specific life domains.Domain-Specific Self-EsteemResearchers have delineated...

Sources of Self-Esteem II: Performance Feedback

Self-esteem is intricately tied to our perception of competence and our ability to exert control over our lives. One of the primary sources of this perception is performance feedback — the ongoing evaluation of our actions in terms of success and failure. According to Franks and Marolla (1976), people derive self-worth from experiencing themselves as causal agents, capable of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. This process nurtures a critical component of self-esteem: self-efficacy,...
Benefits of Self-Esteem01:25

Benefits of Self-Esteem

Self-esteem—an individual's overall evaluation of their worth—plays a complex role in psychological functioning and well-being. It is often associated with many positive traits, such as confidence, optimism, and perseverance. Individuals with high self-esteem typically experience better sleep, manage peer pressure more effectively, and report greater life satisfaction. Conversely, low self-esteem has been consistently linked with increased risks of depression, anxiety, and poor academic or...

Summary

Health psychology students’ well-being factors, including Growth Environment, Effectence, and Medical Condition, were linked to their final course grades. These three factors significantly predicted academic success in the health psychology class.

Area of Science:

  • Health Psychology
  • Educational Psychology

Background:

  • The General Well-being Questionnaire assesses 32 factors contributing to healthfulness.
  • Understanding factors influencing academic performance is crucial in health psychology education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the association between well-being factors and final course grades.
  • To identify specific well-being predictors of academic success in health psychology.

Main Methods:

  • A self-scoring General Well-being Questionnaire was administered to students.
  • Scores from 37 women and 25 men were analyzed for correlation with final course grades.
  • Multiple regression analysis was used to identify significant predictors.

  • Six factors from the questionnaire showed significant correlations with final course grade.
  • Growth Environment, Effectence, and Medical Condition emerged as significant predictors.
  • A multiple R of .522 indicated a substantial predictive relationship.

Conclusions:

  • Specific aspects of well-being, namely Growth Environment, Effectence, and Medical Condition, are associated with academic achievement in health psychology.
  • These findings highlight the potential impact of psychological well-being on educational outcomes.
