A rare case of ophthalmic dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens was identified in a 68-year-old man. Surgical removal of the nematode is the only recommended treatment for this eye condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Parasitology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Ophthalmic dirofilariasis is a rare parasitic infection affecting the eye.
  • Dirofilaria repens is a nematode that can cause zoonotic infections in humans.

Observation:

  • A 68-year-old male presented with sudden, severe left eye pain and itching.
  • Slit-lamp examination revealed a mobile nematode beneath the bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye.

Findings:

  • The subconjunctival nematode was surgically removed and identified as Dirofilaria repens.
  • Identification was based on macroscopic features and transverse sections of the worm.

Implications:

  • Accurate identification of Dirofilaria repens is crucial to guide appropriate treatment.
