Endocardial electrogram amplitudes and stimulation thresholds in monopolar electrodes: possible correlations

E G Antonioli, B Bagni, F G Baggioni

    Journal of Electrocardiology
    |January 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

This study found significant correlations between endocardial electrogram amplitudes and voltage threshold stimulation, particularly using hyperbolic and exponential functions. These findings allow for predicting one parameter from the other, even after initial implantation.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular electrophysiology
    • Biomedical engineering

    Background:

    • Understanding the relationship between electrical signals and stimulation thresholds is crucial for cardiac device optimization.
    • Endocardial electrograms provide vital information for assessing cardiac function and pacing parameters.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between unipolar endocardial electrogram amplitudes and voltage threshold stimulation.
    • To identify mathematical models that best describe this relationship.
    • To enable prediction of stimulation parameters based on electrogram amplitudes.

    Main Methods:

    • Testing correlations using electrodes with two different metallic tip areas.
    • Standardizing pulse characteristics for all threshold measurements.
    • Analyzing data using linear, exponential, potential, hyperbolic, and translated hyperbolic functions.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • A significant correlation was observed between electrogram amplitudes and voltage threshold.
    • Hyperbolic and exponential mathematical functions demonstrated the strongest correlation.
    • The established correlations allowed for the deduction of one parameter when the other was known.

    Conclusions:

    • The study successfully established predictable correlations between endocardial electrogram amplitudes and voltage threshold stimulation.
    • The findings are applicable not only at the time of initial implantation but also for later assessments.
    • This predictive capability can aid in optimizing cardiac pacing and device management.
