Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Otolaryngology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Sinusitis is a frequent complication in patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
  • Understanding the characteristics and treatment outcomes of sinusitis in this population is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the clinical, radiographic, and laboratory features of sinusitis in hospitalized HIV-infected patients.
  • To evaluate the therapeutic responses and disease progression of sinusitis in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 65 sinusitis cases in 58 HIV-infected patients hospitalized between 1985 and 1994.
  • Analysis of clinical symptoms, radiographic findings, laboratory data, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Sinusitis occurred in 65 cases (58 patients), with 77.6% classified as CDC group C.
  • Radiographic evidence showed 69.2% acute and 30.8% chronic sinusitis.
  • Antibiotic therapy provided partial response in most cases, but complete resolution was achieved in only 47.4% of acute sinusitis and none of the chronic sinusitis cases.

Conclusions:

  • Sinusitis is a frequent, often recurrent, and treatment-refractory condition in HIV-infected patients.
  • Sinusitis in HIV patients frequently presents with non-specific symptoms and may not fully resolve with standard antibiotic treatment.
  • Further investigation into optimal management strategies for sinusitis in immunocompromised individuals is warranted.
