Summary

Open psychotherapy groups in psychiatry can achieve considerable stability despite high patient fluctuation risks. This study shows that even with open enrollment and low initial motivation, these groups can be effective for psychiatric patients.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy Research
  • Group Dynamics

Context:

  • Psychotherapeutical groups in psychiatry often operate as open groups, allowing patients to determine their attendance duration.
  • This open format can lower participation barriers but may lead to high patient turnover.
  • The study examines a specific group of psychiatric patients to assess stability within this model.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the stability of an open psychotherapeutical group in a psychiatric setting.
  • To investigate whether considerable stability can be achieved despite the open format, lack of a waiting list, and low initial participant motivation.

Summary:

  • The analysis focused on a group of psychiatric patients participating in an open psychotherapeutical group.
  • Findings indicate that significant stability was achieved in the group.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This stability was observed notwithstanding the open enrollment, absence of a waiting list, and initial low motivation of new members.
  • Impact:

    • Demonstrates that open group formats in psychiatry can achieve notable stability.
    • Suggests that patient-led attendance duration in psychotherapy groups does not necessarily preclude consistent group functioning.
    • Provides evidence for the potential efficacy and sustainability of open psychiatric group therapy models.
