Summary

Stereotactic core biopsy is a reliable alternative to surgical biopsy for diagnosing breast microcalcifications. This less invasive method is cost-effective, quick, and results in fewer complications and no mammographic distortion.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Breast Imaging
  • Interventional Radiology

Background:

  • Conventional methods for uncertain breast microcalcifications include mammographic review or surgical excision.
  • Stereotactic wide-bore needle biopsy (core biopsy) offers a less invasive alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and reliability of stereotactic core biopsy for assessing clustered mammographic microcalcifications of uncertain etiology.

Main Methods:

  • Percutaneous core biopsy performed under local anesthesia using stereotactic mammography.
  • Procedure applied to 297 cases of clustered calcification from November 1992 to October 1995.

Main Results:

  • Core biopsy diagnosed malignancy in 7.4% of cases, confirmed by surgical biopsy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Benign findings were reported in 89% of cases, with surgical biopsy confirming benignancy.
  • Malignancy was confirmed in cases reported as 'suspicious' or technically unsatisfactory.
  • Conclusions:

    • Core biopsy is a satisfactory and reliable alternative to open surgical biopsy for microcalcifications.
    • It is cost-effective, rapid, has minimal complications, and avoids mammographic distortion.
