Lactoferrin and lysozyme in arthritic exudates

    Summary

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) exudates show higher lactoferrin (LF) and lysozyme (LZ) levels compared to non-RA fluids. This suggests increased neutrophilic granulocyte component release in RA joint inflammation.

    Background:

    • Lactoferrin (LF) and lysozyme (LZ) are proteins found in neutrophils.
    • Their levels in arthritic exudates can indicate inflammatory processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare lactoferrin (LF) and lysozyme (LZ) levels in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and non-RA exudates.
    • To investigate the relationship between LF, LZ, and leukocyte counts in these conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure LF and LZ concentrations in plasma and arthritic exudates.
    • Leukocyte counts were also determined for comparison.

    Main Results:

    • Mean LF concentration was significantly higher in RA exudates (9.1 mg/l) than in non-RA exudates (3.3 mg/l).
    • LZ levels were also higher in RA exudates (7.4 mg/l) versus non-RA (4.7 mg/l).
    • Exudate/plasma ratios for LF and LZ were higher in RA, and the LF/leukocyte ratio was significantly elevated in RA.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest a more pronounced release of neutrophilic granulocyte components in RA compared to non-RA arthritis.
    • LF and LZ may serve as potential biomarkers for RA-associated inflammation.
