Meeting the challenge of culture care in nursing: diversity, sensitivity, competence, and congruence

Using examples from a number of developed and developing countries, this article defines, illustrates, compares, and contracts cultural diversity, cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence. Leininger's Sunrise Model provides the theoretical basis for determining nursing care that is culturally congruent. Two simulation games, designed to enhance cultural sensitivity, are included as well as a glossary of terms.
