Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Semi-implantable middle ear electromagnetic hearing devices (SIMEHD) offer a potential solution for hearing loss.
  • Existing external units for such devices require further optimization for clinical applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a miniaturized, low-power external unit for SIMEHD clinical trials.
  • To integrate advanced signal processing and radio-frequency telemetry for efficient sound transmission.

Main Methods:

  • A commercial hearing aid was adapted, replacing its receiver with a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
  • The ASIC incorporates peak-value DC bias adjustment, sigma-delta modulation, RF modulation, and class D output driving.
  • Radio-frequency (RF) telemetry was utilized for coupling sound signals to the internal SIMEHD unit.

Main Results:

  • The developed external unit demonstrated expected functionality in bench-top tests.
  • Measured current consumption ranged from 1.65-2.15 mA, projecting a battery life of approximately 15 days.
  • The system achieved a bandwidth of 6 kHz with approximately 2% harmonic distortion.

Conclusions:

  • The miniaturized, low-power external unit is suitable for SIMEHD clinical trials.
  • The ASIC-based design provides efficient audio processing and RF signal transmission.
  • The projected battery life supports extended usage for hearing device users.
