Summary
Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is common in Turkey, but this study found no direct link between HP and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in gastric biopsies. IM prevalence increased with age, suggesting other factors contribute to gastric precancerous lesions.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Gastric carcinoma of the intestinal type is thought to arise from precancerous gastric lesions.
- Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is a known cause of chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia (IM).
- High HP seropositivity in Turkey may correlate with the region's high gastric cancer incidence.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in endoscopic gastric biopsy specimens.
Main Methods:
- Histopathologic examination of 840 biopsies from 210 patients.
- Assessment of HP positivity and IM presence using histopathology and CLO testing.
- Statistical analysis of HP and IM prevalence across different age groups.
Main Results:
- HP positivity was found in 74.3% of patients.
- IM was present in 48% of the total study group.
- No statistically significant relationship was found between HP seropositivity and IM (p > 0.05), but IM prevalence significantly increased with age (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- This study did not establish a direct relationship between HP seropositivity and IM in the studied population.
- The high prevalence of HP infection at early ages is noted as a common risk factor.
- Other contributing factors for the increased rate of IM in older age groups need to be considered.
