Summary

Weight change significantly impacts cholesterol levels in older adults. Both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol decreased with age, but weight change was the primary driver of these lipid alterations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cross-sectional and prospective effects of age, weight change, and other factors on lipid and lipoprotein levels in an elderly cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A community-based sample of 1041 men and 1303 women (aged 50-93) was studied cross-sectionally and prospectively over 8 years.
  • Multiple linear regression models were used to identify predictors of lipid level changes.
  • Analyses accounted for covariates such as smoking, alcohol, physical activity, and medication use.
