Area of Science:

  • Embryology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Bronchogenic cysts typically arise from the foregut during embryogenesis.
  • Subdiaphragmatic locations are uncommon, with retroperitoneal occurrence being exceedingly rare.
  • Few cases have been documented in English-language medical literature.

Observation:

  • A unique case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst is presented.
  • Clinical, radiographic, and surgical findings were documented.
  • The cyst was identified without other associated congenital anomalies.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst.
  • The pathogenesis involves aberrant migration of primitive foregut tissue.
  • This highlights a rare developmental anomaly.

Implications:

  • Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis for retroperitoneal masses.
  • Awareness of this rare entity is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.
  • Further case reports may elucidate the full spectrum of this condition.
