Summary

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery complication rates are comparable across teaching programs. While residents had more minor complications, they had fewer major ones compared to non-residents.

Background:

  • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is increasingly common in otolaryngology.
  • Variability exists in FESS training, partly due to potential complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate complication rates in a FESS teaching program.
  • To compare these rates with other programs and non-resident surgeons.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 106 consecutive FESS cases at a teaching institution.
  • Comparison of complication rates between resident and non-resident surgeons.
  • Analysis of complication rates based on anesthesia type.

Main Results:

  • Overall complication rate was 13.9%, with all minor complications.
