Background:

Conclusions:
Appropriate Gram stain and cultures should be obtained in cases of hyperacute conjunctivitis, especially in young patients, and systemic antibiotics should be initiated promptly where Gram-negative diplococci are found and prophylaxis for close contacts considered in Neisseria meningitidis conjunctivitis.
