Summary

This report details a rare case of bilateral accessory tragus development in the suprasternal region of a 25-year-old man. Histological analysis revealed characteristic features, and surgical excision resulted in no recurrence.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Embryology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Accessory tragus (preauricular appendage) is a common congenital anomaly.
  • Typically presents as a unilateral, preauricular skin tag or cartilage nodule.
  • Arises from the first branchial arch during embryonic development.

Observation:

  • A 25-year-old man presented with bilateral, firm, protruding suprasternal masses present since birth.
  • No family history or other symptoms were reported.
  • Histopathology showed telogen follicles with vellus hair, fibrovascular tissue, and fat lobules with a central cartilage core.

Findings:

  • The suprasternal masses were histologically consistent with accessory tragus.
  • This bilateral suprasternal presentation is highly unusual and, to our knowledge, has not been previously documented.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete surgical excision was successful with no evidence of recurrence during follow-up.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the potential for accessory tragus to develop outside the typical preauricular area.
    • Suggests a broader spectrum of presentation for first branchial arch anomalies.
    • Provides a case study for understanding rare congenital malformations and their management.
