REM sleep behaviour disorder, a condition with excessive motor activity during sleep, was identified in two elderly patients. Both patients responded well to clonazepam treatment, suggesting its therapeutic potential.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Psychogeriatrics

Background:

  • REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia marked by motor activity during REM sleep.
  • It is linked to the absence of muscle atonia during REM sleep.
  • Limited literature exists on this recently described condition.

Observation:

  • Two cases of RBD were identified in 349 elderly patients at a psychogeriatric unit.
  • The patients presented with clinical features characteristic of RBD.

Findings:

  • Both identified patients demonstrated a positive response to clonazepam therapy.
  • Clonazepam may be an effective treatment for REM sleep behaviour disorder.

Implications:

  • This study highlights the presence of RBD in elderly populations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clonazepam shows promise as a treatment for RBD.
  • Further research is warranted to explore RBD's clinical features and treatment options.
