Process and outcome measures for the multidisciplinary collaborative projects of a critical care CNS

Evaluation of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) can vary, depending on the area of specialty focus, priorities of the various role components, and experience in the CNS role. Based on Hamric's theoretical framework, process and outcome measures provide evidence of the CNS's impact on care delivery. Various multidisciplinary, collaborative projects of a unit-based CNS are explored, with their respective process and outcome measures. In the current climate of downsizing and healthcare reform, the necessity of CNSs to demonstrate their effectiveness is of paramount importance. Not only process measures but also quality and cost outcome measures should serve as indicators of CNS performance.
