Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can be safely administered to patients with aortic stenosis and normal left ventricular function, demonstrating clinical improvement without cardiac complications. This finding addresses a gap in managing patients with this valvular defect.

Background:

Observation:

  • Two cases of patients with moderate to severe aortic stenosis (confirmed by echocardiography) undergoing ECT are presented.
  • Patients received courses of ECT for clinical improvement.
  • Cardiac function was monitored throughout the procedures.

Findings:

  • ECT resulted in clinical improvement in both patients.
  • No untoward cardiac complications were observed during or after ECT.
  • Left ventricular function remained normal in both cases.

Implications:

  • ECT is a potentially safe treatment option for select patients with aortic stenosis.
  • Careful patient selection, including assessment of left ventricular function, is crucial.
  • Further research may expand the use of ECT in patients with valvular heart disease.
