Unlubricated condom use significantly increases urinary tract infection (UTI) risk in women. However, using lubricated condoms or spermicides with unlubricated condoms can neutralize this increased risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between condom use (lubricated vs. unlubricated) and spermicide use with the risk of acquiring a first UTI in college-aged women.

  • A case-control study was conducted with 144 women experiencing their first UTI and 286 controls without a history of UTI.
  • Participants completed questionnaires on contraceptive use, specifically condom type and frequency, in the two weeks prior to symptom onset.
