Summary

Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels significantly increased in healthy men during four days of altitude hypoxia. This suggests IL-6 may stimulate red blood cell production at high altitudes, rather than mediate inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in serum concentrations of key inflammatory cytokines during acute altitude exposure.
  • To explore the relationship between these cytokines, oxygen saturation, and acute mountain sickness (AMS) symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Ten healthy men were monitored at sea level and for four days at 4350m.
  • Serum levels of IL-1 beta, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured.
  • Arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and AMS symptom scores were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Serum IL-6 concentrations significantly increased with duration of altitude exposure (ANOVA p = 0.002).
  • No significant changes were observed in IL-1 beta, IL-1ra, TNF alpha, or CRP levels.
  • Elevated IL-6 levels correlated with lower SaO2 (r = -0.45, p = 0.003) but not with AMS scores or heart rate.

Conclusions:

  • Altitude hypoxia leads to increased serum IL-6 in healthy individuals.
  • The observed increase in IL-6 is unlikely to be primarily for inflammation mediation.
  • IL-6 may play a role in stimulating erythropoiesis (red blood cell production) at high altitudes.
