Observation:

  • A 14-year-old male sustained a penetrating eye injury from a cormorant beak while fishing in North Queensland.
  • Despite aggressive antibiotic therapy and surgical intervention, the patient developed fulminant endophthalmitis.

Findings:

  • Aeromonas sobria was successfully isolated from the vitreous aspirate of the affected eye.
  • The bacterial infection led to a poor visual prognosis, necessitating enucleation.

  • Water-contaminated penetrating eye injuries warrant a high suspicion for Aeromonas sobria infection.
  • Early recognition and appropriate management are critical to improve outcomes in similar cases of severe ocular infections.
