Background:

  • Assessing consciousness in patients with postcoma unawareness (PCU) is challenging.
  • Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) offer a non-invasive method to evaluate cognitive processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To map cognitive auditory ERPs in PCU patients to assess their conscious responsiveness.
  • To compare ERP characteristics between PCU patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a passive P3 paradigm to record N2, P3, and Slow Waves in ERPs.
  • Mapped auditory ERPs in eight PCU patients and eight matched normal controls.
  • Analyzed signal/noise ratio and hemispheric asymmetry of ERP waveshapes.
