Summary

Patients with mania exhibit significantly lower red blood cell folate levels compared to controls. This suggests a link between reduced red blood cell folate and bipolar disorder, not dietary factors.

Area of Science:

  • Neurobiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Red blood cell folate levels are crucial for neurological function.
  • Previous research indicated reduced red blood cell folate in depression.
  • The role of red blood cell folate in mania remained less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate red blood cell folate levels in patients diagnosed with mania.
  • To compare red blood cell folate levels between manic patients and a healthy control group.
  • To explore the association between red blood cell folate and the manic phase of bipolar disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 45 hospitalized patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of mania.
  • Measured mean red blood cell folate levels in patients and a control group.
  • Assessed serum folate levels and matched participants for socio-economic status.

Main Results:

  • Manic patients had significantly lower mean red blood cell folate levels (193 nmol/l) compared to controls (896 nmol/l) (P < 0.00001).
  • No significant differences were observed in serum folate levels between the groups.
  • Reduced red blood cell folate in mania was independent of absorption or dietary deficiencies.

Conclusions:

  • Red blood cell folate deficiency is associated with the manic phase of bipolar disorder.
  • Findings suggest red blood cell folate reduction occurs in both manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder.
  • This highlights the potential importance of folate status in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder.
