Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma rarely metastasizes to the jaws.
  • Maxillary involvement is exceptionally rare, with only one prior reported case.
  • Metastatic jaw tumors present diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old male presented with right maxillary pain and swelling.
  • Initial diagnosis suggested maxillary sinusitis based on Water's radiograph.
  • The patient had a history of primary osteosarcoma of the left femur.

Findings:

  • Panoramic and periapical radiographs revealed secondary osteosarcoma deposits.
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology confirmed metastatic osteosarcoma.
  • This case represents a rare instance of maxillary osteosarcoma metastasis.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering metastatic disease in jaw swelling, even with initial sinusitis diagnosis.
  • Emphasizes the role of advanced imaging and cytology in diagnosing rare metastatic bone tumors.
  • Contributes to the limited literature on maxillary osteosarcoma metastasis, aiding future clinical recognition.
