Abstract:
Two groups of patients who had reconstruction of acetabular defects at cemented total hip replacements were assessed clinically and radiographically. Group I included 77 hips in 44 females and 26 males aged 36-80 (mean 66.2 years) with primary acetabular defects. Follow-up ranged from 12 months to 15 years (mean 6.3 years). Group II included 98 hips in 58 females and 32 males aged 32-84 (mean 67.8 years) who underwent revision acetabular replacement due to the loosening. Follow-up ranged from 12 months to 15 years (mean 4.1 years). In Group I frozen homologous bone graft was used additionally to autologous grafting in 5 cases only. In all revision cases frozen homologous bone graft alone were employed. In primary surgery early result was poor in 3 cases (3.9%) and in revision operations in 13 cases (13.2%). According to the author correct placement and fixation of the bone graft must be followed by only partial weight bearing till the grafts are fully incorporated.
