Elderly patients with atrial rhythm disease frequently experience fainting spells. This condition is a significant cause of acute cerebral ischemia in older adults, often requiring pacemaker implantation.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Neurology
- Geriatrics
Background:
- Atrial rhythm disease (arrhythmia) is common in the elderly.
- Cerebral vascular pathology is a serious concern in older populations.
Observation:
- 13 patients (69-85 years) with atrial rhythm disease were studied.
- High frequency of syncope (fainting) and loss of consciousness observed.
- 11 patients required endocardial stimulation (pacemaker) due to severe symptoms.
Findings:
- Atrial rhythm disease is strongly linked to syncope in the elderly.
- Significant correlation between atrial arrhythmias and acute cerebral ischemia.
Implications:
- Highlights atrial rhythm disease as a critical cause of stroke in the elderly.
- Emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and intervention for arrhythmias in older patients.
- Suggests pacemaker implantation as a viable treatment for severe symptomatic cases.
Abstract:
13 patients aged between 69 and 85 suffering from atrial rhythm disease were examined. Special attention was paid to the relationships between this syndrome and acute cerebral vascular pathology. The series shows the high frequency in arrhythmic atrial disease of episodes of incipient loss of consciousness or authentic syncopal phenomena. Fully 11 patients were subjected.....ed to definitive endocardial stimulation owing to the intensity of the symptomatology. On the basis of these observations, stress is laid on the importance of atrial rhythm disease as a cause of acute cerebral ischaemia in the elderly subject
