Summary

Injectable vitamin K treats hypoprothrombinemic states. A patient developed eczematous vitamin K1 hypersensitivity after treatment with aqueous vitamin K1 for warfarin-induced hypoprothrombinemia.

Background:

  • Hypoprothrombinemic states necessitate vitamin K therapy.
  • Cutaneous vitamin K hypersensitivity is historically linked to fat-soluble vitamin K1.
  • Eczematous and sclerodermoid lesions characterize this hypersensitivity.

Observation:

  • A patient with warfarin-induced hypoprothrombinemia received aqueous vitamin K1.
  • The patient subsequently developed eczematous skin lesions.

Findings:

  • The observed eczematous lesions were consistent with vitamin K1 hypersensitivity.
  • This case suggests aqueous vitamin K1 can also elicit hypersensitivity reactions.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider hypersensitivity to aqueous vitamin K1.
