Summary
The C2 dorsal root ganglion is proximally located and fills most of its foramen. This anatomical positioning may increase the C2 ganglion
Area of Science:
- Anatomy
- Spinal Nerves
- Cervical Spine
Background:
- Dorsal root ganglia in the mid-lower cervical and lumbar spine are well-documented.
- Limited data exists on the C2 dorsal root ganglion's position and foramen dimensions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the anatomical position of the C2 dorsal root ganglion.
- To measure the heights of the C2 ganglion and its corresponding foramen.
Main Methods:
- Dissection of 15 cadaveric cervical spines.
- Observation and measurement of the C2 dorsal root ganglion and foramen heights.
Main Results:
- C2 ganglion height: 5.7 ± 0.8 mm; C2 foramen height: 7.7 ± 1.2 mm.
- The C2 ganglion occupies 76% of the foramen height.
- All C2 dorsal root ganglia were located within the foramen between the atlas arch and axis lamina.
Conclusions:
- C2 dorsal root ganglia are proximally positioned and largely fill their foramina.
- This anatomical configuration may predispose the C2 ganglion to entrapment.
